I was in Ottawa to watch a bit of the building of the ice for the NHL Winter Classic in December, 2017 where the home team, the Ottawa Senators, shut out the Montreal Canadiens with a score of 3-0. I have a ton of pictures from that I took over two days, including a practice session where the Senators took to the ice to try it out — and I thought I should share them with you.
It was extremely cold, as you might be able to tell from the pictures, but despite the cold, TD Place in Landsdowne Park, which is home to the CFL’s Ottawa Redblacks Canadian football team, enjoyed a sell-out crowd of 33,959 brave and warmly-dressed patrons. NHL.com reported the 12.5F temperature at puck drop was slightly warmer than the outdoor record low of 0F, recorded in Edmonton, Alberta for the 2003 Heritage Classic.
